Susan Rowell, MD, MBA, FACS, is a Professor of Surgery at the University of Chicago and a nationally respected trauma surgeon with 20 years of experience caring for severely injured and critically ill patients. She has been extensively funded by both the DoD and NIH and served as the primary investigator for the Prehospital TXA for TBI Trial that showed improved survival in patients with traumatic intracranial hemorrhage that received tranexamic acid, changing the way patients with traumatic brain injury are treated across the world. Dr. Rowell runs an annual symposium at the University of Chicago focused on penetrating brain injury and is funded by the DoD to create a consortium of civilian Level 1 trauma centers to collect biospecimens, imaging, and clinical data to improve care for patients with penetrating brain injury. Over the past decade, Dr. Rowell’s research focus has revolved around circulating biomarkers of brain injury and she is currently working with the DoD to examine brain specific biomarkers in both US civilian trauma patients and Ukrainian warfighters with penetrating brain injury.
