Clifford Lowell MD, PhD

Distinguished Professor and Chair of Department of Laboratory Medicine, UCSF

Dr. Lowell is a Distinguished Professor and Chair of Laboratory Medicine at UCSF. He is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he received his MD and PhD degrees. He completed his medicine residency training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, after which he completed his clinical and research fellowships at UCSF. He was appointed Assistant Professor in Laboratory Medicine, rising through the ranks to become Department Chair in 2006. His research area is in immune cell signal transduction, where he has pioneered studies of tyrosine kinases and tyrosine phosphatases in innate immune cells. These studies have mainly used genetically modified mice, examining signaling responses in infectious and autoimmune disease models. As Department Chair, he works with the over 40 Clinical Pathology faculty members who serve as the medical directors for the UCSF clinical laboratories. This includes the Transfusion Service at UCSF and the cellular therapy production facility used for translational research programs on campus. He has published over 250 articles in immunology (h index = 108) and is a recent electee of the AAP and the ACCA.
